A tangible poem captures geometry and transforms it into play
Solid Fragility
At the beginning of the project, after various prompts from Mario, I focused on the question: “What does the poetry of an object mean to you?”
At first, I was speechless, almost disoriented. In the following days, that question kept chasing me—perhaps because my instinctive approach to design had never demanded the effort of conceptualizing my thoughts.
After much reflection, I realized that poetry offers us a different way of exploring beauty, revealing unexpected meanings and potentials. It surely surpasses mere functionality and begins to probe that deeper sense of things that evokes hidden emotions.
I came to understand that in my work, this perspective is emphasized through the use of forms that conceal symbols within them—symbols not immediately visible. My objects are not meant to be mere tools for utility; they aim to communicate emotions, cultures, and symbolic narratives. In doing so, they tell stories destined to grow and endure over time—something far beyond simple functional use.
The attention to form, materials, textures, and the relationship with the person and the surrounding space aims to create an experience that evokes a dense, emotional, and intellectual dialogue.
Understanding the deeper roots of my design approach helped me identify play as the main theme of my narratives.
A playful object in its gestures, with the strength and courage to gather messages, layers, and building blocks into its story. A Jenga tower in marble—or perhaps it’s better to say two—that represents not just a physical balancing game, but also a sensory and conceptual experience. It evokes the desire to break free from conventional constraints and embrace individual expression.
The first tower, solid and intact, rises with imposing elegance and declares strength and permanence through the tactile coldness of polished marble. The second tower, precarious and hollow, balances physically and aesthetically—each precisely cut block is a poem written in stone, a fusion of art and functionality. Its polished surface discreetly reflects the light, creating a play of shadows that dances along its vertical structure.
The contrast between the majesty of the solid tower—telling a story of endurance through time, where every imperfection becomes part of its character, a narrative carved into ancient stone—and the tension between the solidity of stone and the fragility of the game expressed in its precarious and ever-changing twin, adds suspense, highlighting the balance between permanence and discontinuity.
It is not merely a stack of blocks, but a tangible poem that captures the essence of solidity, history, and the underlying tension in every movement.
And finally, the traces—the primitive engravings, the additions to the natural material—the surface adorned with primitive motifs and bold lines that scream against the monotony of the ordinary, inviting exploration of art in disorder, radical and human artifice, and the necessity of a playful approach. It becomes a bold declaration of rebellion against sterile and celebratory methodism.
The two towers become a medium to communicate the need to challenge rules, embrace disorder, and adopt a different approach.
It is an ode to creative freedom, a call to celebrate diversity and break free from the chains of conformity.
